Propagating Seed

There are three different ways to propagate Geranium seeds, natures way, lazy man’s way and the expert’s method and they all work to varying degrees. You can purchase seed on-line or collect your own. Seeds will germinate the quickest at temperatures around 70 degrees, use a propagating mat if necessary and plenty of filtered light.

Nature's way

‘Natures ’way is to make a small hole in your starting mix with a pencil and holding the seed with the spiral ‘wing’ attached, place it seed first in the hole using tweezers. The seed will start germinating in about 10 days with some seeds taking as long as a month. This is the fun way!

Lazy Man's Method

‘Lazy Man's method is to lightly sand one side of the seed on fine sandpaper, as the seeds are hard and do not soak up moisture easily. Place the seed on a wet paper towel placed in an a tray and cover it with a clear material and keep the towel moist as needed. Tiny leaves and roots will form in 7 to 14 days. Transplant the seedlings into your planting mix within 24 hours after seed germinates using tweezers.

Expert Method

The experts method requires some patience, skill and a low power +15 microscope. The seed must be scarified with an X-Acto knife and the entire procedure stresses semi-sterile conditions and the use of a Petri dish. Rather than me trying to explain it all on this page simply click here
